YouTube New Feature in Action: Testing a ‘Play Something’ Button
Google-owned YouTube keeps on releasing new features to enhance the user experience. In this regard, the company is now reportedly testing a new feature dubbed as a floating “Play something” button. The feature is discovered by 9to5Google in the YouTube app for Android. The button is found just above the bottom bar of the app. Users just have to tap on the button and it intuitively selects a YouTube video to play. The feature is said to provide a seamless and effortless viewing experience to users.
How The Feature Works:
As soon as you tap on the ‘Play Something’ button on YouTube, a video will start playing in a special player mode. This is exactly similar to the YouTube Shorts, but it is not limited to Shorts. It plays regular videos too. The player comes with several buttons that can help you decide whether or not you like the video. These buttons let you decide to like, dislike, comment, and share the video.
Additionally, the feature also comes with a timeline button at the bottom that helps you scroll through the video. Do remember, when the video is played inside that special player, the ‘Play Something’ button will disappear. This means that you won’t be able to use the button to play another random video until you exit the player mode.
The video in this special player will be played in a vertical format, taking up most of the screen. The company has been testing this feature since last year. The feature ‘Play Something’ comes from version 19.50 for Android.
To recall, YouTube recently rolled out the ‘Parent Code’ lock feature to its platform. The feature offers more control over kids viewing habits. If the feature is enabled on the platform, then the user will have to enter a 4-digit password to access YouTube.
