Russian Gaming Console: Will PS5 and Xbox finally get a worthy competitor?
PlayStation and Xbox consoles have already made a great impact on the gaming industry. Now, it seems like the two giants are going to face some heat with a new competitor. In a recent development, it has been mentioned that Russia is also developing its own gaming consoles. This came right after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the country should also focus on delivering systems and gaming hardware.
Russian Gaming Console: What is on the cards?
The first console from the country will be powered by the Elbrus processor created by the Moscow Center of SPARC technologies. The console will be running on Aurora on the Alt Linux operating system. Now, if you compare the Elbrus processor to the PS5’s AMD Zen 2 chipset, there is a huge gap in terms of performance.
To make you understand with the example, the Elbrus processor was only able to run around 10-year-old games at moderate settings. Now, this could be a major turnoff for the Russian audience. Because, if the government or a country wants to bring something like a console, then no one will want to spend money on a machine that can only play old games.
Apart from that console, Russian telecom company MTS is all set to introduce Fog Play which will be a cloud gaming platform (available for $45) that allows users to rent computing power from users possessing high-end PCs.
What about the limitations?
The biggest limitation with the console is that Russia is not that much ahead in the game in terms of processors. Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy Anton Gorelkin has already said that the current Elbrus system will be unable to catch up with the current PlayStation 5 or Xbox consoles.
As for the Elbrus processor, it has been designed for defense and infrastructure applications in Russia. Now, using it for gaming is obviously going to be a challenge for the country. Expectations are that Russian firms will work on improving the performance of the processor before using it in their gaming console so that the chipset can at least reach the level of PS5 to an extent.
